Morocco seems to have landed another Spanish starlet
Brahim Diaz has decided to take the step to play for Morocco, as sources close to the Moroccan Football Federation have confirmed to MARCA. The change in nationality of Real Madrid’s player is already on its way to being resolved, depending on some minor administrative details.
Brahim has represented Spain internationally at all levels, including the senior team, where he made his debut against Lithuania with De la Fuente on the sidelines in the match in which the players called up by Luis Enrique for the Euros could not participate due to Sergio Busquets‘ positive Covid test. Brahim was an U-17 champion with Spain.
The problem arises with the highly probable call-up of the forward for the African Cup of Nations, meaning that Real Madrid will not be able to count on him during the month of January, a time with a heavy load of matches where squad depth becomes crucial.
How can players switch national teams?
Players with dual nationality are able to switch national teams as long as they have played no more than three times for a national team before turning 21 years old, including qualification matches but not World Cup matches.
A player who, because of his nationality, is eligible for more than one federation can only represent one of them in an international match if, in addition to having the relevant nationality, he meets at least one of the following conditions:
Having been born in the territory of the federation; having one of his biological parents or one of his grandparents born in the territory of the federation, or having lived continuously for at least five years in the territory of the federation.
