Libyan-italian Security Working Group Convenes 3rd Meeting in Rome

The Libyan-Italian security working group held its third meeting in Rome on Wednesday with the participation of officials from the interior and defence ministers of both sides.

The director of Libya’s International Relations and Cooperation Department headed the session together with the Italian director of the General Administration of Immigration and Border Police.

The meeting tackled issues of illegal immigration, securing land and sea borders, training and rehabilitation, and support for Libya to develop its capabilities in combating crime.

During the meeting, the parties agreed on a set of goals, most notably, the necessity of continuing support for the Libyan agencies engaged in combating illegal immigration, cooperation on border and coastal security, and implementing training courses for Libyan crews.

They also identified direct contact points to exchange information on human trafficking rings and to schedule visits of Italian experts to the technical school of the General Administration of Training as part of Libya’s strategy to localize training for police officers.
