Tunisia has foiled 190 attempts by illegal migrants to cross the Mediterranean into Italy in one week, according to a statement released by the Tunisian National Guard on Tuesday.
During the operations between Oct. 15 and Oct. 21 off the country’s coasts, Tunisia’s coast guards rescued 2,663 illegal migrants from sinking boats, the statement said.
To combat illegal migration, the coast guards arrested 56 suspects for being involved in organizing illegal migration trips and 30 wanted persons, it added.
In a phone conversation on Monday, Tunisian Interior Minister Kamel Feki and his Italian counterpart Matteo Piantedosi affirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation on migration issues and combating organized crimes and human trafficking networks.
Located in the central Mediterranean, Tunisia is one of the most popular places for migrants seeking to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa, which is only about 80 km from the Tunisian coasts.
