Angola Examines Sending Soldiers to Congo Democratic Republic

The National Assembly will end the analysis on the draft resolution that would authorize the request of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, as commander-in-chief of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA).

The President’s request has already received the approval of three specialized commissions of the Assembly, which issued their joint opinion report last Wednesday.

According to the above, the FAA contingent will have the mission of supporting and encamping the M23 insurgent group in the eastern part of the democratic Congo and contributing to the normalization of relations between the CDR and Rwanda.

The contingent, chich must remain in the CDR for 12 months, will be formed by an FAA battalion and its respective components, and will have a financial backing of some 11,266 million kwanzas (around 22.3 million dollars), according to what was published by the Angop press agency.

The three commissions that supported the initiatives are as follows: Constitutional and Legal Affairs; Security, Internal Order, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Homeland and the commission of Foreign Relations, International Cooperation and Angolan Communities Abroad.

At the meeting of the commissions, the Minister of State and head of the Military House of the President of the Republic, Francisco Furtado, argued that sending in the contingent is in line with the agreements to face the current crisis in the east of the DRC, that is, it responds to the implementation of the so-called Luanda road map and the Nairobi process for the promotion of security in the eastern region of the DRC and the normalization of political and diplomatic relations with Rwanda.
